1. Start With the Measured Room
Record finished wall dimensions, ceiling height, windows, doors, plumbing, electrical locations and appliance specifications. Test standard cabinet widths before deciding that custom work is necessary. Fillers, end panels and mouldings can resolve many small gaps, but they should not be used to hide inadequate appliance clearances, blocked doors or unusable corners.
If a standard catalogue creates excessive fillers, inaccessible storage or large unused areas, semi-custom or custom sizing may be justified. If standard modules fit cleanly, RTA or stock cabinets can reduce design complexity.
2. Compare Total Installed Cost
Total project cost = cabinets + fillers/panels/trim + hardware + delivery + assembly + installation + disposal + countertop changes + plumbing/electrical work + taxes.
Use the same approved layout and inclusion list for every quote. RTA may shift labour from the factory to the site; stock assembled cabinets may increase delivery handling; custom work may include design and fitting that another quote excludes. The label alone does not determine the final cost.
3. Compare Schedule and Replacement Risk
A useful schedule names dependencies: design approval, stock confirmation, production, delivery booking, assembly, installation, countertop templating and trade work. “Fast” is not a schedule. Ask what happens if one door, cabinet or hardware item arrives damaged and how long matching replacements are expected to remain available.
RTA and stock systems can be quicker when the required modules are genuinely available. Custom cabinetry adds design approval and fabrication milestones but can reduce site compromises when the room has unusual dimensions.
4. Compare Delivery and Installation Responsibility
Flat boxes can be easier to move through elevators, stairs and narrow hallways, but they need a clean assembly area and a defined quality-control process. Built cabinet boxes reduce assembly work but require wider access and careful damage inspection. Custom work usually relies on specialist installers familiar with the approved drawings and site tolerances.
For every format, identify who is responsible for wall conditions, shimming, fastening, cabinet alignment, appliance openings and adjustments. Assembly and wall installation are separate scopes.
5. Compare Design Flexibility Without Overbuying
RTA and stock systems are limited to their catalogues, but a complete range of fillers, finished panels, mouldings and accessories can still produce a coordinated result. Custom cabinetry is appropriate when the project needs non-standard widths, integrated architectural details, unusual materials or a finish unavailable in standard lines. Extra flexibility is valuable only when the project uses it.
