Short answer: Premade cabinets can work well in small Canadian kitchens when the layout protects appliance and door clearances, uses vertical storage and minimizes filler waste. Start with verified measurements and workflow—not a style photo.
Measure the Constraints First
- Finished wall lengths and ceiling height
- Window and door trim
- Plumbing, vents and electrical locations
- Appliance body and door-swing dimensions
- Elevator, hallway and stair access
Small-Kitchen Layout Options
| Layout | Works well when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| One-wall | The room is narrow or open to living space | Not enough landing space beside appliances. |
| Galley | Two parallel walls can maintain a clear aisle | Opposing doors and drawers colliding. |
| L-shaped | A corner can support two connected runs | Blind-corner access and filler requirements. |
| Compact U-shaped | The room has enough width for three runs | Tight aisle and appliance-door conflicts. |
Use Vertical Space Deliberately
Taller wall cabinets can add storage, but verify ceiling variation, crown clearance and installation access. Store infrequently used items high and keep daily items between comfortable reach zones.
Choose Storage That Saves Motion
- Wide drawers for pots and food containers
- Tray dividers near ovens
- Pull-outs only where internal width remains useful
- Corner hardware selected after comparing usable volume
- Waste and recycling planned before finalizing the sink base
Protect Clearances
Allow fillers beside walls so doors and drawers clear handles and trim. Verify refrigerator, dishwasher and oven door swings against islands and opposing cabinets. Do not reduce the working aisle merely to add another cabinet.
Small-Space Order Checklist
- Confirm appliances before cabinets.
- Approve a dimensioned plan.
- Check every door and drawer swing.
- Review delivery access.
- Assign assembly and installation responsibility.
- Keep part numbers for future replacements.
